Kanjivaram Sarees
The Saree That Outlived Three Generations: What Happens to a Kanjivaram at 40 Years Old?
Let's settle this first: a real Kanjivaram silk saree does not expire. A 40-year-old one isn't a relic. It's proof of purchase done right.
What time actually does to it
Pure mulberry silk doesn't fade into dullness. It softens. The stiffness of a new Kanjivaram saree, the board-like feel that makes you nervous at the first drape, gives way to a fluid fall that a new saree cannot fake. Collectors know this. Your grandmother's saree drapes better than yours does.
The zari is another story. Traditional zari is silver thread with a gold coating and silver oxidizes. After decades, the gold-toned borders may darken or turn a muted antique shade. This is not damage. It's the signature of authentic metal thread. If your 40-year-old Kanjivaram silk saree still gleams like it came off the loom yesterday, ask questions.
Where the real damage happens
Age rarely ruins a Kanjivaram saree. Bad storage does. The enemy is the fold line. Silk left in the same creases for years weakens along them, and eventually splits. Plastic covers trap moisture and cause yellowing. Hanging a heavy saree stretches the weave under its own weight.
How to protect one that's been in your family
- Refold every three to four months, shifting the fold lines each time.
- Wrap it in soft muslin or cotton, never plastic.
- Air it in shade for a few hours, away from direct sun.
- Keep it away from perfume, mothballs and damp walls.
- Dry-clean rarely. Once every few years, and only with a cleaner who has handled heavy silk before.
When it needs restoring
Frayed borders, worn pallu edges and tarnished zari are fixable. Skilled artisans can repair weave damage and old zari can be recovered and reused in a new piece. Don't hand a heirloom to a general tailor. Go to someone who works with silk.
Wear it
The biggest mistake families make is treating an old kanchipuram saree like a museum piece. A saree locked in a cupboard for 20 years ages worse than one worn at a wedding every few years and cared for afterwards. Silk likes to be used.
A Kanjivaram silk saree is one of the few things you can buy today that your granddaughter may still be wearing in 2090. Buy it that way. Care for it that way.
At Shrus, every Kanjivaram saree is chosen to last that long.
