SHIBORI SAREES

A Shibori saree features a beautiful, fluid patterning created using an ancient Japanese resist-dyeing technique. The word Shibori comes from the Japanese verb root "shibu," meaning to wring, squeeze, or press. Instead of painting or printing designs onto the fabric, artisans bind, fold, twist, or clamp the saree before dipping it into dye, resulting in soft, organic, three-dimensional patterns with no sharp lines.

While both are traditional resist-dyeing methods, they differ significantly in technique and aesthetic:

Bandhani: Involves plucking and tying microscopic points of fabric with thread, resulting in a structured, repetitive pattern of tiny, sharp square or circular dots.

Shibori: Uses a much wider variety of techniques—including folding (Itajime), stitching (Nui), or wrapping fabric around poles (Arashi). This creates large, fluid, abstract patterns like waves, diagonal storm streaks, marble textures, or geometric blocks.

Because the fabric needs to absorb dyes deeply while enduring twisting and binding, Shibori is typically crafted on natural, highly absorbent fabrics. The most popular variants include lightweight Mulberry and Tussar silk, breathable cotton silk blends, fluid modal silk, and breezy pure cotton or linen.

Proper care depends on the base fabric, but because many pieces use rich or natural dyes, special attention is required:

Washing: Dry cleaning is highly recommended for silk, modal, and premium cotton-silk variants to preserve the dye intensity. For pure cottons, gently hand wash separately in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral liquid detergent.

Drying & Ironing: Never wring the fabric. Line dry it flat in a shaded indoor area away from direct sunlight to prevent color fading. Iron on the appropriate fabric setting (silk/cotton) from the reverse side.
