BANANA PITH SAREES

Also known as Vaazhai Naar Pattu or Banana Silk sarees, a Banana Pith saree is a highly sustainable, eco-friendly textile woven from natural fibers extracted from the inner stem (pseudostem) of the banana plant. Often blended with cotton or pure silk yarns to enhance its softness, it stands as a brilliant example of transforming agricultural waste into a luxury garment.

The texture of a banana pith saree falls beautifully between cotton and silk. It is crisp, structured, and holds a neat drape like a fine cotton, yet possesses a natural, subtle, liquid-like sheen that resembles pure mulberry silk. Yes, authentic traditional versions are highly labor-intensive. Artisans manually scrape the layers of the banana stem to harvest the delicate inner fibers. These are sun-dried, spun into strong yarn by hand-twisting, and then woven on traditional handlooms. Because it uses natural processes, the fabric features subtle, beautiful artisanal irregularities.

Because plant-pith fibers are delicate when wet, hand washing in cold water with a mild, pH-neutral detergent is recommended. Avoid machine washing, harsh scrubbing, twisting, or wringing the fabric. To keep the colors vibrant, always line dry the saree completely flat in a heavily shaded area away from direct sunlight.
